Trends In Music For 2008

Frank Zappa put it best when he said "Modern music is people who can't think signing artists who can't write songs to make records for people who can't hear".

But what happens when you cut out the "people who can't think"? The artist would become in direct contact with the individual, the record companies have to strictly enforce copyright to not lose their grasp, and new artists become a dime a dozen. Welcome to the future of music in 2008.

By now your 160gb mp3 player is probably starving for new music and with 2008 just starting you want to know who to watch and where to look. The truth is, no one can tell you who to watch and no one should, but we're going to show you where to look to find music you'll like instead of wasting your times with ones you won't.

Pandora - Dubbed the music genome project, Pandora allows you to type in an artist you like and then leads you to similar artists. This free streaming service will lead you from artist to artist as you let it know if it's going in the right direction or not.

Last.fm - If video killed the radio star, the internet brought it back. Last.fm allows anyone to create their own station and you have the opportunity to listen. Their search function allows you to find the artist or genre you're looking for and the similar tastes those people have.

We7 + Spiral Frog - Forget paying to download music, these services are funded by advertisements to give you the music for free. Keep your membership active and follow their guidelines any you'll be able to download this music to both your computer and mp3 player.

Last year, Radiohead released their CD "In Rainbows" through digital distribution on their website. The cost was completely to you under their "pay what you want" system that ran between October and December last year, because like the Eagles and Prince, Radiohead is without a contract and decided that they don't need one. Because of actions like this, expect album prices to go down, digital music sales to continue rising, and bands to compete for your attention at your price point in the upcoming year. When you can stream or download any song you want when you want onto your computer, mp3 player, or mobile device, purchasing a physical or digital album is voting with your money. Make that's one of the two votes you cast in 2008.

Here is nice website where you can find the latest music releases and the most popular music hits of all time, music videos, lyrics, single and album reviews.

Beyond Beginner Guitar Chords

So... is it time to move on? Are you bored with just knowing open chords like C, G7, E, Am, and D?

Don't fret. There's a really easy way to turn one chord into 12.

What is it? Bar chords.

Here's how bar chords work:

You take a chord that you know in open position. Let's use E major as an example. Re-finger it so that you aren't using your index finger. Now pretend that your index finger is fretting all of the strings right behind the nut. Scoot all of your fingers up one fret. Your index finger will now be laying across the first fret.

That's an F chord.

Now strum it. A lot of the notes probably sound dead. It happens. Play the notes one at a time to find the ones that aren't clear. There's a 99% chance that the bad notes are on the low E, B, and high E strings. Those are the strings you are barring with your index finger.

Experiment with how hard you press and where you position your index finger to find the place that works for you. Don't worry, it'll take a few tries, and everyone's hands are different.

Now scoot that entire shape up until you're index finger is on the fifth fret. Play it. It should be easier to press down than the F chord. This chord is A major.

Practice playing the bar chord at every fret.

That's it. Bar chords take a little getting used to but the payoff is enormous.

Guitar Lessons Online - About Strumming

Strumming is a guitar playing technique that every guitar player should master. Even those who learned and play mostly by reading music notes, should learn to play by strumming, and play it very well.

That way, they will certainly add richness and variety to the song or piece they play. Further more, they will surely come to a time when they are required to strum the chords of a song or melody that others are singing or playing.

The most important thing to take into account when learning and playing guitar strumming, is sound quality. Strumming is not just some noise made while others are singing or playing. It is music too!

You must focus all your efforts on getting the most clean, neat and musical sound out of your guitar.

You strum a guitar strings by stroking all or several strings in a single downward or upward right hand movement.

Sometimes you strum all six strings with a single quick movement. Sometimes you just strum the bass strings, and sometimes you strum only the treble ones.

Some guitar players, when strumming downwards, like to use the nail of the middle finder; others like to use the nails of all fingers (except the thumb). Generally, they also prefer to do upward strumming using the nail of their thumb finger.

But there are many players that like the sounds obtained when strings are plucked or strummed using the fingertips (fleshy part of the finger end).

The best form (and that used by most pros), is a combination of both forms, nails and fingertips, combining them in upward and downward strokes, on all six strings or bass or treble strings only.

Besides, not all strokes are played with the same strength (intensity). Some of them are accented (played louder) than others.

This way, you can achieve very colourful and rich guitar strumming patterns.

A strumming pattern is a repeated sequence of upward and downward strokes, each one of them with its own characteristics (nail of fingertip, upward or downward, accented or not).

You can learn guitar strumming patterns yourself by reading and practicing guitar lessons and books. In that case you must listen very carefully to recordings of music with some guitar strumming showing up. You will certainly learn a lot, too, watching videos about guitar strumming. Go to YouTube, do a search, and you will find a lot of them.

Remember, quality of sound is your goal.

The Alto Voice of the Viola

The viola is simply a larger version of the violin, but it differs in its tone, strings and how it is played. While the violin has a higher pitch, the viola has a slightly lower pitch. Also, the viola is played with the pads of the fingers than the fingertips as is the case with the violin. This is a result of the larger size of the viola. The places where the fingers must be placed in order to strike the right note are a little farther apart and the vibratos' are also a little broader. In fact, the playing of the viola is similar to that of the cello in some ways because of its larger size. The strings are also different from that of the violins and more similar to those of the cello. The viola's highest string is the A string. The next is the D string, then the G string and then the C string.

While some of the technique in playing the viola is very much like that of the cello, the viola is held the same way as the violin. The viola can be a little more difficult to play because of the spacing on the viola and most viola players will opt to play a smaller version of the viola rather than a larger version because the demands on the stretch of the fingers is less.

The bow is also a little thicker than that of a violins bow in order to play the instrument properly. There also does not appear to be a whole lot of music written for the viola in the past. It was more of an instrument that was to have a smaller part in order to add to the music, but major parts were not overly popular for it. In the twentieth century, however, it changed. As music began to evolve, so did the interest grow for people to start writing more pieces for the viola. Viola music is quite unique and specialized to the instrument, so most music has to be altered in order to incorporate the viola or new music must be written. Many have done this and now the viola has been used in folk, country and many other genres of music.

It could be the deeper and richer sound that the viola has in comparison to the violin. The violin has a higher and more delicate sound. The viola has a slightly deeper and richer sound and it is this difference that the educated ear can easily pick up and tell the difference between the two instruments. When familiar with the sound of one or both of them, the difference in the sound is unmistakable. Regardless of the differences, the beauty of the sounds created by the viola when in perfect tune and properly played are almost hypnotizing. Most people enjoy the sound of the viola fully as it tends to create a soothing and calming sound. Perhaps this is the reason that more effort is being put in by composers to include the viola in a larger role than before.

So What's the Best Way to Learn Guitar?

While the guitar has been a popular instrument for many years, more and more people are wanting to learn to play it for themselves. Teens may fantasize about becoming the next big rockstar, but there are many people who just want to learn to play the guitar just so they can enjoy making music. So many of these enthusiastic guitar fans don't find the best way to learn guitar however, and after a few fruitless attempts they give up.

Everyone learns a bit differently. Besides that fact, we all have different resources, different schedules, jobs and demands on our time. If you are not making the strides you wish you were, perhaps it is because you haven't found the best way to learn guitar. There are many methods to learn to play this instrument out there. A few are listed below.

Theory Books

There are lots of theory books that you can buy to teach you how to play the guitar. Some are actually very good, and if you learn best this way, an excellent theory book may be the way to go. This method is cheap, and you can learn at your own rate. However, most of us don't do well using this method by itself. If you are patient and determined however, this may be the best way to learn guitar for you.

Video Lessons

You can find video guitar lessons on tapes and DVDs in most music stores as well as online. You may even find some video lessons online, some of which are even free of charge. Learning with a video is dynamic and you may stay more focused. Like the theory books, these lessons allow you to practice whenever it is convenient for you. The only real drawback is that you can't get feedback or personalized attention like you would with a teacher.

Private Lessons

If you have time and money to dedicate to your pursuit, most people are successful if they take private lessons. A good guitar teacher can design a program that is customized to your learning style and you get feedback and one-on-one attention to keep you on track. They can also correct any mistakes you may be making early, so they don't become habits. This is the best way to learn guitar for many people.

Learning by Ear

Some people who were born blessed with natural musical ability find learning the guitar by ear to be fun and effective. With modern technology that allows us to slow down audio, this is a lot easier than it used to be in generations past.

Remember that you should be having fun playing the guitar. If it is more stressful or difficult than you think it should be, it could be the learning strategy you've chosen that is making it this way. If you really want to find the best way to learn guitar, you may need to try many methods before you find the one that you like best. If you have the money and the time to practice regularly, you'll find that having private lessons will be the quickest way to achieve the goal you've set.

Lunar Magick

Do you think you could you resist a special invitation to a magickal gathering under a full moon in Hawai'i? I certainly could not. And in this story, I invite you along to a chance to wish for what you want, a chance to explore new mystical territory, and a chance to learn how to expand our own boundaries.

There are many magicks in The Islands, but a special few know the truths of goodness and light. Sacred are certain sites in this land of aloha, and respect is paid in full by we the people... Thus I share with you this virginal experience - a night sure to be magickally remembered by us all...

When our close friend, DJ, asked my wife & I if we would like to document an assembly of white witches under a sky of stars, we jumped at the opportunity. This monthly meeting of a coven (congregation) is called an Esbat, and is usually held when the moon is full.

DJ was raised in the Wiccan religion, and continues to observe those traditions. Wicca is a religion of the Earth, and its followers honour the earth, planets & stars, along with Goddesses and Gods. Because of past harassment from others who wouldn't understand, many of the Wiccan practices and philosophies are passed from generation to generation by word of mouth teachings. Since Wiccans believe all earth is sacred, there is no need for churches. This is why worship and rituals can be performed anywhere.

When DJ advised us of the location, she informed us that we should be clothed in white. Though Barbara & I had a dinner party planned for that evening and did not have the appropriate attire, we quickly rearranged our evening's itinerary with just a phone call.

Our next challenge was to find a friend to transport us there. (Our mopeds were not suitable for this journey around the Island!) A close friend was very eager to accompany us and participate as well. She, too, looked forward to this new experience and thanked us for the unusual distraction. Everything fell into place so easily, as if we were meant to be there.

The ride to this gathering featured clouds oozing slowly down the mountains. The peaks of the valley were lost within a thick billowyness of 3-D giant puff clouds, floating over all. Hawai'i skies possess powers all their own. Dusk was upon us, and beckoned were we by the enticement of the evening.

Approaching the location, we weren't quite sure exactly where we should be meeting our friend. It was now dark and eerily quiet, with nary a soul in sight. We drove back & forth on the dirt road a couple of times... Even my wife, who has a built-in compass and can find her way anywhere, began to doubt our direction.

"This is the right place, isn't it?" we were asking ourselves. After all, we did not expect to see signs on the road "This Way To The Coven Gathering"! And, this was a unique location, so we were certain that we followed the directions. Still looking, still searching...

Wait! There she was, up ahead now. We were greeted by a lovely vision of swirling white - lighting our way in the darkness. While we were being introduced to the others, they were advised of our mission there. If anyone had an objection to this article or the taking of photos, they were to let us know. But no one did offer resistance.

About a dozen people were ready to participate in this evening's rituals. There were a couple of people we already knew, which enhanced our gathering. Everyone seemed inviting & comfortable with our presence, so we were completely at ease. The group shared pleasantries and wine while The Magick Circle was being created. The Circle is where the celebration and practice of magick occur.

We commence these rituals with purpose, curiosity and enchantment. Tonight Barbara and I are historians. Documentarians. Witnesses to Magick. We're invited to participate if we wish. To enter into The Circle Of Magick.

The ground was nearly as dark as the sky - beginning with the making of the white circle was first, in white powder; then the pentagram was drawn inside.

Four Swords of Strength were planted into the dirt, grounding The Circle in all four directions: North, South, East & West. Each of The Corners has a corresponding candle colour. The Gathering of the Graces would now be underway.

A small table was put into the center of The Circle. On this table were flowers placed; many candles of various colors for many wherefores; a koa wood bowl containing water, and another bowl with salt for purification. Elements represented on the altar were Earth, Fire, Air and Water. There was also a golden goblet of wine to share within The Circle, and incenses & oils for consecration. There was also a cauldron of charcoal. I would learn the reason for this later during the ceremony. A large blue glass jar held water for blessing and cleansing. Mystic music played as soft bells were chimed. Slowly but surely, the altar was formed as the centerpiece of The Circle.

Before entering The Circle, you are invited to write your wishes. Magick paper was distributed - small beige squares with large gold, solid circles. Each wish must be written out on separate sheets; then folded. You must write out exactly what you wish for. Negative or vengeful wishing is duly warned against. Wiccans are very aware of how to properly use their magick.

As with everything else in life, there are some basis philosophies to remember: "Be careful what you wish for." "Do not use your magick for bad purposes." "What you give, you get back threefold."

I wish for success in business. I wish good health for my family and I. I wish to find true love. I wish to buy a dependable car. I wish for a good grade on that last report. These, I'm certain, were some of the wishes written out by group members. This was my favorite part, and I had many wishes!

The High Priest and High Priestess invite members into The Circle. The following words are posed to each individual: "It Is Better For You To Fall Upon The Sword Than Enter This Circle With Fear In Your Heart. How Do You Enter?". Each answer is the same: "With Perfect Love And Perfect Trust". One by one, each person accepts the invitation into The Circle and to The Watchtowers.

The group forms a circle within The Circle, and the High Priestess begins the ceremony. This writer's eyes close, and I am surrounded by the soft music and her soft words. I am in my own Magick Circle right now...

My eyes open to wishes that are placed one sheet by one sheet into the cauldron. The coals have been lit. Fire leaps up, almost mischievously - then, as quickly, settles again with its offerings. The cauldron accepts all requests. The High Priestess asks for all wishes to be recognized and acted upon.

A late arrival stands out once he has entered The Circle. Bobby is a handsome young man, stunning in black, and adds drama to our white contrast. I learn that he is a warrior, as well a healer. I read humbleness and warmth in his eyes. His face is very kind and gentle, and I see a serene blue aura, with flashes of a dark power, surrounding him.

A goblet of wine is passed from person to person so you may never thirst. Cookies are distributed so you may never go hungry, as the rite of communion was originated by The Pagans. I like this thoughtful & compassionate remembrance.

The High Priest and Priestess utter special incantations, and begin to close The Circle. They ask that good forces remain strong so that evil shall not prevail. Again, directions and elements are beckoned and thanked by the High Priestess. The group leaves The Circle, with the altar intact, and cauldron & candles still flickering.

I stay a seated observer. I ponder. I watch. I hear. I absorb. I write. But I have not yet placed myself within the circle.

A light has drawn me into its hypnotic glow. I gaze into a glass hurricane, and the candle seems to become a golden saber. My visions are in full force tonight.

Champagne is served in the spirit of love and trust. A sense of unity is felt. Laughter and stories fill the night air. I learn the High Priestess is not feeling well, so she is clothed in black as a form of invisibility, protecting The Circle from illness and negativity. The illness I felt from her I learn is deep within, and incurable. She remains realistic and tries to live her life "normally" - whatever that word is supposed to mean. She maintains her inner strength, though at times her physical body is in turmoil. I immediately feel more respect for her, and wonder if I could be as strong faced with her situation.

Anyone is now able to enter The Circle; but The Dark-Robed One remains alone in there. He exudes a contagious inner peace. His disciplined motions are slow, calculated, and languid. His eyes remain closed as he moves inside The Circle. His balance never falters. He and his mighty sword are one.

He is one of the people we already knew before this night, and now I know my intuition about him was right. I had always felt the extremes within him, like goodness & sincerity, along with everything else. I watch in amazement and bewilderment. Upon completion of his ceremonial tasks, he turns to leave, pays his respects to the altar and exits The Circle.

DJ gifts me with yet another honour: I can wear one of her bewitching capes. This is a magickal experience in itself. The writer adorns it as if she were born to it. I am now completely cloaked in magick's embrace.

Spreading my wings of white, I take this opportunity to finally enter The Circle, sans quill. My eyes take in every item, on and off the altar. I study the swords planted in the ground. I close my eyes to further absorb the intensity of The Circle and its elements so that I, too, would be filled. I add one more wish to the cauldron and leave The Circle, already eager to attend the next gathering...

The remainder of the night proved to just as mystic as the evening, and we just couldn't go right home... Looming everywhere over us, the night sky now manifested great strength. So on the ride back, we park at Makapu'u Beach, walk along cool sands, and see a lone lighthouse standing out on its darkened cliff dwelling. Personal reflections abound, and we are hypnotically drawn to the moon.

Visions in the sky are definitely dramatic and distracting. The creamy clouds seem to enhance our mood by mightily sweeping across the sky, as if to show the true force of nature. Standing so small, we are evermore spellbound by the magick of the night and the magick of the Islands...

Creating A Podcast

Creating a podcast is both simple and fun, and with a small amount of effort it can payoff for both yourself and your listeners. A podcast is simply a media file, which has uploaded to the Internet and is syndicated out to listeners, many of whom are hopefully subscribers, for playback on their PC's or MP3 players. The word podcast can also refer to the method by which the media files are syndicated out to listeners.

When recording an audio podcast the show should be recorded in the highest quality possible. One of the best, and most simple, programs out there for audio recording and editing is Audacity; coincidentally it is also free. After recording you should export your audio into MP3 format, which has become the standard for podcasts, although there are many podcasts available in WMV (Windows Media) format also. However, exporting your podcast in anything other than MP3 format may mean that some users will not be able to listen to your podcasts.

When creating your MP3 you should keep the following in mind about quality. A 64k bit-rate is great for talk radio, audio books, talk radio with background music, and just about anything else you can think of. However, if you are intent on publishing quality music, if you are say a musician or DJ, then you should strongly consider publishing your content in a 128k bit-rate.

There are also podcasters who choose to include ID3 tags. The most frequently used ones are title (the title of the show), and artist (mostly the podcaster), although I have seen podcasters also include genre, year, and even comments. This isn't a bad idea, particularly if you are a musician, but also for those who may save their own podcasts.

After creating your audio media, you must upload it to your website for distribution.

Next comes the task of creating the RSS (Really Simple Syndication) feed. A RSS feed contains all the needed information about your podcast, and points prospective listeners to both your website and to your hosted audio files on the Internet. Some podcasters create their own feeds by hand, but for many people this is a fairly difficult task to undertake. There are many free options available on the Internet for creating your podcast feed, but I would personally recommend FeedForAll, a quality program that can be downloaded for a modest price, available at www.feedforall.com. Not only do these programs help you properly format your RSS feed, which is essential, so that everyone may be able to read it, but they also simplify the entire process.

One of the major mistakes I see with podcasts is that many podcasters fail to provide detailed descriptions for their podcast series and individual shows. It is unfortunate that all too often many podcasters may include only a few words or no description at all for their series or shows. This is a major selling point for your podcast, and should not be overlooked; many times this is the only chance that a podcaster will have to sell their podcast to potential listeners.

The podcast series description should be brief but descriptive, containing 75-100 words (approximately 4-5 full sentences), and should give your listeners the gist of what the podcast series is about. Information such as the host's name, any credentials, and when and how often the podcast is updated, are all very important to include.

Item descriptions, or descriptions of individual shows, should be detailed about the show. It is not necessary to include information about the entire show, but should always contain information on at least the first one-half of the show. Many successful podcasters item descriptions are only a transcript of their verbal intro at the beginning of the show. The item description should also be approximately 75-100 words, and should contain talking points for the show, music line-up, or other relevant information. It is also important to note that the item description for a show can also contain HTML coding, allowing you to create hyperlinks or include images.

Another important aspect of creating your RSS feed is to include an IMAGE element in your feed; although it is not required for the functionality of your RSS feed, it is almost a necessity. Many podcasters call this album art, or a cover; it is extremely important for branding purposes.

After finishing up your RSS feed and saving it you should upload the feed to your website.

Finally, it is up to you to get your feed out onto the Internet. Publishing the feed on your homepage is not enough. You should take the time to list your podcast in several podcast directories/portals.

'Antidotes' by Foals - Album Review

For all the ubiquity of post-punk inspired bands flooding the mainstream over recent years, the amount of truly innovative music they have collectively produced has been disappointing by comparison. It's not difficult to see why; the original class of 78-82 set the bar high and bequeathed one of the most astonishingly imaginative musical legacies ever - a lavish cross-pollination that embraced punk, disco, dub reggae, funk, glam and krautrock to often dizzying extremes. And while some of these acts (Talking Heads, Wire) have become touchstones for a generation of indie kids, other key players (Associates, Magazine) have proved simply too rich to rob - talents so 'out there' as to defy influence.

It's a willingness to experiment, both musically and technologically, that's been missing of late. All the aforementioned artists broke new ground in the studio and, in their own ways, redefined what the pop single could be - mental but magnificent, yet still within detection of the Smash Hits radar. Certainly, the likes of Franz Ferdinand and Maximo Park have produced top-notch material in recent years but, worryingly, little new ground has been broken and the 30-year-old model remains the blueprint.

Thank flip, then, for Foals and their wonderful new album, Antidotes. Ostensibly, given their youth, NME-darling status and oft-mentioned Skins appearance, it would be easy to dismiss this Oxford bunch as yet more spiky-guitar-driven, jerky vocal, Gang of Four wannabes. Not so. Foals have ambition by the truckload and, while their influences are clearly apparent, they've applied them in new and unpredictable ways. And finally, thrillingly, over a decade after Oasis single-handedly kicked the cack out of musical progression, here's a guitar band that's clearly in love with the studio, electronics and the notion of stretching possibility.

The singles Cassius and Balloons are perfectly formed pop confections that, like with all the best albums, only scratch the surface of the whole. African-influenced guitars abound but it's the concise drive and restrained neurosis that strikes, as well as the arresting use of saxophone (think Mirror In The Bathroom rather than Baker Street). The album's true heart lies deeper, however, and the tension is released throughout Antidotes at several key moments, so when everyone stops to admire the beautiful view they've created, - the heart-rending chorus of Red Sock Pugie; the gentle ascent of Big, Big Love (vaguely reminiscent of Unforgettable Fire-era U2) - it's exhilarating.

At last, the noughties have their own Fear of Music, Chairs Missing or Fourth Drawer Down - a record driven by an impulse to create something new, where musical dexterity is of secondary importance to the idea, but still retaining one foot on the dance floor. Yes, that good.
